Menopause and bone-health DXA

Bone density can change through the menopause transition, but menopause alone does not tell you whether or when to have DXA. This pathway helps you ask the practice to confirm the appropriate route.

Important limit: A DXA result is one part of fracture-risk assessment. It does not find every cause of bone loss, predict a fracture with certainty or decide whether you need hormone or osteoporosis treatment.

From a bone-health question to a confirmed route

The timing and meaning of DXA depend on the person, their history and the clinical question.

  1. Start the request

Select the menopause bone-health pathway without adding sensitive medical history to public notes.

  2. Confirm the route

The practice confirms suitability, any written request or referral, preparation and appointment status.

  3. Measure and discuss

Attend only after confirmation; a qualified professional places the result alongside other fracture-risk information.

Menopause bone-health DXA: practical answers

Menopause is relevant to bone health, but it is not a blanket instruction for every person to have the same test at the same time.

What is this pathway?
A route for asking whether DXA bone-density measurement is an appropriate next step around or after menopause. DXA measures bone mineral density at specified skeletal sites.
Who may find it useful?
Adults in perimenopause or postmenopause who have been advised to discuss bone density, or who want the practice to assess whether age, an earlier menopause, a previous fracture or another risk factor makes a scan appropriate.
What does it not do?
It does not diagnose the cause of symptoms, measure every aspect of bone strength, predict a fracture with certainty or prescribe menopause or osteoporosis treatment.
How much does it cost?
Practice confirmation required. No public cash or self-pay price has been approved for this pathway.
Do I need a referral or written request?
Practice confirmation required. Ask before booking or travelling; the practice must confirm whether a written clinical request is needed and whether the indication is supported.
Is medical aid accepted or is it self-pay?
Practice confirmation required. Medical-aid claims, authorisation and self-pay arrangements have not been approved for publication.
Appointment or walk-in?
This is a request-based route. A preferred date or time is not an appointment until InsureSPR confirms it.
What should I bring or disclose?
The practice must confirm documents and preparation. Tell the clinical team privately before attendance if pregnancy is possible. Do not place symptoms, medicines or identity numbers in public free-text fields.
How long does it take?
Practice confirmation required. No scan or total-visit duration has been approved for publication.
How and when are results provided?
Practice confirmation required. The report format, professional interpretation, recipient and turnaround time have not been approved for publication.
Where is it and what should I do next?
InsureSPR is at 7 Malibongwe Drive, EmedCentre, Randburg. Submit this pathway request, then wait for the practice to confirm suitability and every outstanding practical detail before travelling.
